2009 exhibition - 2010 Calendar
Description: Meet Adam, his sister Tanya and their cousin David. They were visiting the Downtown Eastside with their grandmother when this photo was taken. "We were going to see my daughter," says Daphne (Carrier Nation), who raises her grandchildren. "We live in Surrey," she says. "We struggle on like everyone else." Daphne hopes her grandchildren graduate and become successful. Adam wants to be a police officer, Tanya a hockey player, and David a computer programmer. Daphne is concerned for people's well-being, especially First Nations people. When visiting the Downtown Eastside she asks people how they're doing and brings bannock to give out.
Photographer bio: This is not the first time Steven Mayes has had multiple winning photos in the contest - in 2007 he had four. "Winning made me take better pictures," says Steven, who has two images in this year's calendar. For Steven, the key to photography is being in the moment. He was on Hastings Street in front of a pizza parlour when he saw his friend Daphne and asked if he could take this photo of her grandchildren. "The kids were too far apart. I told them to get closer," says Steven, whose friendship with the children is reflected in this photo.
